Google Ads for small businesses in Calgary: what a realistic budget looks like
What clicks cost in Calgary, the minimum monthly budget that produces leads, when ads beat SEO and when they waste money, and how to tell if your campaigns are working.

A realistic Google Ads budget for a Calgary small business in 2026 is $1,000 to $3,000 CAD a month in ad spend plus management. Clicks for local services in Calgary run from about $3 to $8 for trades and retail, $10 to $25 for legal, dental, real estate and home renovation, and $30 or more for the most competitive terms like 'SEO Calgary' or personal injury law. With a 5 to 10% conversion rate on a good landing page, that puts the cost per lead between $40 and $250 depending on the industry. Below about $800 a month there is rarely enough data to optimize, and the money is usually better spent on local SEO.
The number everyone asks for
“How much should I spend on Google Ads?” has a real answer, but it depends on three things: what a click costs in your industry in Calgary, how well your landing page turns clicks into calls, and how much a customer is worth to you. Here is how to work it out.
What clicks cost in Calgary
Google Ads is an auction, so the price of a click is whatever your competitors are willing to pay. In Calgary in 2026, typical ranges for the searches a local business bids on:
| Industry | Typical cost per click (CAD) |
|---|---|
| Trades (plumbing, electrical, HVAC), cleaning, landscaping | $4 to $12 (emergency terms higher) |
| Restaurants, retail, salons, fitness | $2 to $6 |
| Dental, physio, chiropractic, clinics | $8 to $20 |
| Accounting, bookkeeping, immigration services | $10 to $25 |
| Real estate, mortgage, home renovation | $15 to $35 |
| Legal (family, criminal, immigration) | $20 to $50 |
| Personal injury, SEO agency, insurance | $30 to $80 |
Check your own terms in Google’s Keyword Planner; the ranges move with the season and the competition.
From clicks to leads to customers
A click is not a lead. On a good landing page, 5 to 10% of clicks become a call, a form or a booking. On a slow, generic home page it is often 1 to 2%. That difference is the whole economics of the campaign.
At $8 a click and a 7% conversion rate, a lead costs about $115. At the same $8 with a 2% conversion rate, it costs $400. Same ads, same budget, three times the cost per lead, because of the page.
Then work out what a customer is worth. A plumber whose average job is $450 and who closes half the leads can pay $115 a lead all day. A lawyer whose average file is $5,000 can pay $400. A café cannot pay either, which is why cafés should spend on Google Business Profile and reviews instead.
A realistic starting budget
For a Calgary service business, $1,000 to $3,000 a month in ad spend is the range where campaigns work. Below about $800, there are too few clicks to see which keywords, ads, hours and areas produce leads, so nothing can be improved; the money buys clicks but not learning.
Management on top of that. Ours is $449 a month and covers the build, landing pages, conversion tracking, weekly optimization and a report you can read.
So an honest all-in number for the first three months is $1,500 to $3,500 a month. If that is not available, local SEO at $549 a month will usually produce more over a year, just more slowly.
When ads are the right call
Ads work when you need leads now: a new business with no rankings yet, a seasonal service (furnace repair in October, landscaping in April), a new service you want to test before building pages for it, or a market where the organic results are locked up by directories and you need to be on the page anyway.
Ads are the wrong call when the landing page is slow or generic, when there is no way to track a call or a form back to the click, or when the customer value is too low to cover the click price. Fix those first or the budget evaporates.
Ads versus SEO, over time
Ads are a tap. Open it, leads flow; close it, they stop. SEO is a well. It takes months to dig and then produces at a falling cost for years. In year one, a Calgary business will usually get more leads per dollar from ads. By year two, a well-run local SEO program has usually overtaken it, and by year three the comparison is not close.
The practical plan for most businesses we work with: ads for the first six months while the local SEO foundations are built, then shift budget toward SEO as organic leads grow, keeping a smaller ad campaign for the terms and seasons where it still pays.
How to tell if it is working
Track leads, not clicks. Every call, form and booking from the ads should be recorded with the keyword and ad that produced it. Then look at three numbers monthly: cost per lead, cost per customer (leads times your close rate) and the value of those customers. A campaign with expensive clicks and cheap customers is a good campaign. A campaign with cheap clicks and no customers is a bill.
If your current campaigns cannot show you cost per lead, that is the first thing to fix, before any bidding change.
Where to start
Send us your service and area and we will estimate your click costs, a starting budget and a realistic cost per lead, using live Keyword Planner data, before you spend anything. Then you can decide with numbers whether ads, SEO or both is the right place for the money.
- Budget for data, not just for clicks. Under about $800 a month you cannot learn what works fast enough to fix it.
- The landing page decides the cost per lead as much as the bids do. Sending ads to a slow home page doubles what you pay per call.
- Ads are right for immediate demand, new businesses and seasonal pushes. SEO is right for compounding, lower-cost leads over years. Most Calgary businesses need ads for the first six months and SEO for the rest.
- Measure cost per lead and cost per customer, never clicks. A campaign with expensive clicks and cheap customers is a good campaign.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum Google Ads budget that makes sense in Calgary?
Around $800 to $1,000 CAD a month in ad spend for a local service business. Below that, clicks are too few to see which keywords, ads and times of day produce leads, so the campaign never improves. Add management on top; ours starts at $449 a month.
How much does a click cost in Calgary?
It depends on the industry. Roughly: $3 to $8 for trades, cleaning, retail and restaurants; $10 to $25 for dental, legal, accounting, real estate and renovations; $30 and up for the most competitive terms such as personal injury, mortgage broker or SEO agency. Google's Keyword Planner gives current ranges for any term.
Should I run Google Ads or do SEO?
Both, in sequence. Ads produce leads next week and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes three to six months and then produces leads at a falling cost for years. New businesses and seasonal ones lean on ads; established ones should be shifting budget toward SEO every year.
Why are my Google Ads not working?
The usual causes, in order: the landing page is slow or generic, the campaign uses broad match keywords that attract the wrong searches, there is no conversion tracking so nothing can be optimized, and the budget is spread across too many services. Fixing tracking and the landing page comes before touching bids.
What does Google Ads management cost with Infinite Ideas?
