SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what a Calgary business actually needs in 2026

SEO gets you ranked, AEO gets you quoted as the answer, GEO gets you recommended by ChatGPT. What each one means, how they overlap, and which a Calgary business should pay for first.

Quick answer

SEO (search engine optimization) gets your website ranked in Google's results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your content chosen as the direct answer in featured snippets, voice assistants and Google AI Overviews. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business named inside answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. They build on each other: a Calgary business needs solid SEO first, then AEO and GEO on top, and most of the work (clear answers, structured data, consistent business details) helps all three.

Three acronyms, one question

Every week a Calgary business owner asks us some version of the same thing: “Do I still need SEO, or is it all AI now?” The answer is both, and the three acronyms are easier to understand once you see what each one is trying to win.

SEO: be on the list

Search engine optimization is the original job. Someone types “plumber Calgary” into Google, and Google shows a list. SEO is everything that gets your page onto that list and up it: a page for each service, titles and descriptions that match the search, fast loading, links from other sites, a Google Business Profile that matches your website, reviews.

SEO is measured in rankings, impressions and clicks. It is not going anywhere. In 2026 Google still handles the vast majority of searches, and AI assistants themselves lean on Google’s index and on well-ranked pages when they answer.

AEO: be the answer

Answer engine optimization is about the box above the list. When Google shows a featured snippet, a “People also ask” answer, a voice assistant reads one result aloud, or an AI Overview summarizes the topic, it has chosen one source to quote. AEO is the work of being that source.

That means writing the answer before the explanation. A page that opens with “Sewer line replacement in Edmonton costs between $X and $Y and takes one to two days” is quotable. A page that opens with “Welcome to our website, we are passionate about plumbing” is not. It also means FAQ sections with real questions, FAQPage structured data so Google can read them, and headings that match how people ask.

AEO is measured in snippets won and in Google Search Console’s “AI features” impressions.

GEO: be the recommendation

Generative engine optimization is the newest layer. Someone asks ChatGPT “where can I buy raw dog food online in Calgary” and gets a short list of businesses with a line about each. GEO is the work of being on that list, described correctly.

Large language models build those answers from what they can read: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, news. They favour sources that state facts plainly (who, what, where, how much, how to order), that are consistent across the web, and that are cited by others. Vague marketing copy gives them nothing to work with.

GEO is measured by asking. You run the questions your customers ask through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini and record who gets named. Then you do the work and ask again.

How they fit together

Think of it as one building. SEO is the foundation and the structure: without indexed, fast, well-organized pages, nothing else stands. AEO is the signage: clear answers on every page, formatted so machines can read them. GEO is the reputation: enough consistent, cited, factual presence that when an AI is asked, your name comes out.

In practice the work overlaps so much that we treat AEO and GEO as one add-on. The direct-answer block at the top of a service page wins snippets and gets quoted by ChatGPT. The LocalBusiness structured data feeds Google Maps and tells Gemini where you are. The FAQ answers the “People also ask” box and gives Perplexity a sentence to cite.

Two Calgary-area examples

Insta Rooter, a sewer and drain company in Edmonton, had a site Google barely indexed. We did the SEO foundations first (titles, descriptions, indexing, internal links). Then we wrote one page that answered a real question nobody else answered well: the $800 EPCOR subsidy for sewer line work, who qualifies and how to apply. That page is now the reason ChatGPT mentions the company. Clicks nearly doubled in four months, and Search Console counted 514 impressions in AI features in three months.

Canadian Raw, a raw dog food maker in Calgary, has a Shopify store with plain product facts (90% meat, 10% fruit and vegetables, free delivery in Calgary), FAQ and Product structured data. Ask ChatGPT where to buy raw dog food online in Calgary and it is the first store named, ahead of the national chains. Google ranks it in the top three for the same search. Same work, both results.

What a Calgary business should pay for first

If you are local and your customers search by service and city, start with local SEO: a page per service, a Google Business Profile that matches, reviews, and fast pages. That is our Local SEO plan, from $549 a month.

Once that is in place, add AEO and GEO: answer blocks, FAQ and structured data on every page, a baseline of which AI assistants name you, and content written to answer the specific questions your customers ask. That is our AEO and GEO add-on, from $399 a month.

If you are building a new site, do not buy these as separate phases. Every site we build ships with the foundations already in place, because it costs almost nothing to do them at build time and a great deal to retrofit.

One test you can do today

Open ChatGPT and ask it to recommend a business like yours in Calgary. If you are not on the list, look at who is, and open their websites. You will usually find the same thing: a page that says plainly what they do, where, for whom and for how much. That is the whole game, and it is very much winnable for a local business that decides to play it.

Key takeaways
  • SEO is about ranking a page. AEO is about being the answer on that page. GEO is about being the business an AI assistant names.
  • You cannot skip to GEO. AI assistants draw on the same signals Google does, plus clarity: if a page does not state plainly what you do, where and for how much, nothing can cite it.
  • The shared foundation is the same: fast pages, one search per page, plain factual copy, FAQ and LocalBusiness structured data, and business details that match everywhere.
  • For a local Calgary business, local SEO comes first. AEO and GEO are the add-on that turns rankings into recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO part of GEO?

They overlap but are not the same. AEO targets answer boxes, featured snippets and AI Overviews on search engines. GEO targets the large language models behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. Most of the work, clear answers, structured data, entity signals and citations, helps both, which is why we sell them as one add-on.

Will GEO replace SEO?

No. AI assistants look up the web to answer; they cite pages that are indexed, fast and clear. A site with no SEO is invisible to them too. GEO adds a layer on top of SEO, it does not replace it.

How do I know if my business shows up in AI answers?

Ask. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google and ask the questions your customers ask ('who does sewer cleaning in Edmonton', 'where can I buy raw dog food in Calgary'). Note who is named. Then check Google Search Console for impressions in AI features. That is your baseline.

How much does AEO and GEO work cost in Calgary?

Our AEO and GEO add-on starts at $399 CAD per month on top of a Local SEO plan (from $549). Every site we build includes the technical foundations (structured data, answer blocks, clean crawling) at no extra cost.

How long before AEO and GEO show results?

Featured snippets and AI Overviews can pick up a well-written answer within weeks of indexing. ChatGPT and Perplexity vary more, because they browse and cache differently. In our Insta Rooter case, the first AI mentions came from a single well-written page within a few months, and Search Console counted 514 AI-feature impressions in three months.
