Quick answer

Local SEO for a Calgary business comes down to five things done properly: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile in the right category; one page per service and per area you serve, each targeting a real search; identical business details on every site that lists you; a steady flow of Google reviews with replies; and a fast, mobile-first website with LocalBusiness structured data. Most Calgary businesses that are not ranking are missing two or three of these.

Why local SEO is different

When someone in Calgary searches “emergency plumber” or “family dentist near me”, Google does not show the best plumber in the world. It shows the ones it trusts to be real, nearby, open and good, and it decides that from a handful of signals you control. This checklist is those signals, in the order we work through them with clients.

Google Business Profile

1. Claim it and complete every field. Name exactly as it appears on your signage and website, address (or service area if you work from home), phone, hours, website, booking link, services with descriptions, products if you sell any, attributes, and at least a dozen real photos of the work, the team and the premises. Empty fields are ranking you do not get.

2. Pick the right primary category. This is the most common mistake we find. Insta Rooter was listed as Plumber; changing it to Drainage Service matched what the company does and what people search. Choose the most specific category for your main service and add two or three secondary ones.

3. Post something monthly. A job you finished, a seasonal reminder, an offer. Posts show Google the profile is alive, and they appear in the profile when someone finds you.

4. Answer the Q&A. Add the five questions customers ask on the phone, with your answers. Google shows them, and AI assistants read them.

The website

5. One page per service. A single “Services” page cannot rank for ten searches. Sewer cleaning, drain repair, root removal and camera inspection each get a page with a direct answer at the top, what is included, what it costs to find out, and a phone number. Insta Rooter added two service pages for work customers were praising in reviews that the site never mentioned.

6. One page per area, if it earns it. A page for Calgary NW, NE, SW and SE, and for Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks or Chestermere if you serve them, each with real content: how you cover the area, response times, jobs you have done there. Do not clone one page and swap the name; Google notices and so do customers.

7. LocalBusiness structured data. A block of code on every page with your name, address, phone, hours, service area, category and links to your profiles. It is how Google Maps and AI assistants confirm the site and the profile are the same business. Every site we build includes it.

8. Speed and mobile. Most local searches happen on a phone, often outdoors. A page that takes six seconds to load loses the customer and the ranking. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile; below 70 needs work. Our speed guide covers the fixes.

9. Clickable phone and address. On mobile, the phone number should dial and the address should open the map. It sounds obvious; we find sites every month where the number is plain text.

Listings and consistency

10. Identical name, address and phone everywhere. Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, industry directories, Facebook, your website footer. One exact version. Mismatches make you look like several businesses, or an unreliable one.

11. The listings that matter, not all of them. Fifty low-quality directories do nothing. The ten that Google and the assistants actually read do. We keep a Calgary-specific list.

Reviews

12. Ask every happy customer, with a one-tap link. Text it, email it, put it on the invoice. Most people will leave a review if it takes fifteen seconds and they were asked the same day.

13. Reply to every review. Including the bad ones, briefly and without arguing. Replies show Google and future customers that someone is home.

14. Read reviews as a content brief. When customers keep thanking you for a service that is not on the site, that is the next page to write.

What it looks like when it works

Insta Rooter in Edmonton went from 23 to 45 Google clicks in a 28-day window, from 128 to 217 distinct search queries, and from zero to 16 reviews in four months, without a redesign. Canadian Raw ranks in the top three for “raw food for dogs Calgary” and is the first store ChatGPT names for the same question. Neither did anything exotic. They did the checklist.

Doing it yourself versus hiring it out

Items 1, 3, 4, 9, 12 and 13 you can do this week. Items 5 through 8 and 10 through 11 are where a professional earns their fee, because they involve writing, structured data and a lot of tedious consistency work. Our Local SEO plan starts at $549 a month and covers the whole list, with a monthly report that shows what moved.

Key takeaways
  • Your Google Business Profile is a second home page. Category, services, photos, hours and posts matter as much as the website.
  • One page per service, one page per area. A single 'Services' page cannot rank for ten different searches.
  • Consistency beats volume: the same name, address and phone on every listing is worth more than being on fifty directories.
  • Reviews are content. They tell Google and AI assistants what you are good at, and they tell you what pages to write.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to work in Calgary?

Fixing a Google Business Profile and the basics on the site can move rankings within weeks. Competitive services in central Calgary (plumbing, dental, law, real estate) take three to six months of steady work to reach the top three. Anyone promising page one in two weeks is describing a search nobody makes.

Do I need a page for every Calgary neighbourhood?

Only if you serve them differently or customers search that way. A page for each quadrant (NW, NE, SW, SE) and for nearby towns you serve (Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere) is usually enough. Each page needs unique, useful content, not the same text with the name swapped.

What is the right Google Business Profile category?

The most specific one that describes your main service. A drain company should be Drainage Service, not Plumber. A modest fashion boutique is a Clothing Store, with Women's Clothing Store as secondary. Wrong categories are the most common local SEO problem we find.

How many reviews do I need?

More than your top competitors, with a rating above 4.5 and recent dates. In most Calgary service categories that means 30 to 100. Ask every happy customer, make it a one-tap link, and reply to every review, including the bad ones.
